Christmas Cheer Board of Winnipeg switches to meal voucher system – Winnipeg throughout the pandemic

The Christmas Cheer Board is changing the way it distributes groceries to needy Winnipeggers this winter to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Kai Madsen of the Cheer Board said the organization will be handing out food vouchers this year rather than potentially putting thousands of volunteers at risk during the pandemic.

“The decision to move away from fishing catches this year was not an easy one,” said Madsen.

“But given concerns about physical distancing and the risk to the thousands of volunteers helping with all of this, we felt that food vouchers would put much-needed support in the hands of people who need us, as well as potential COVID -19 transmission risks would reduce. “

The Cheer Board said that closer to the holiday season, applicants with disabilities will be given more information on the voucher process.

The organization-sponsored Feed-A-Family basket program continues this year.

“This year has been a challenge for so many,” said Madsen.

“We realize that things may not be the same for our supporters as they were in the past and we want people to know that we are still here and that we will continue to help those who need us.”

Although the Cheer Board won’t open its application phone lines until mid-November, the COVID-19 pandemic in Manitoba is showing no signs of slowing a month in advance.

On Tuesday, Manitoba hit a new record high of coronavirus cases of 124 – and the provincial chief health officer Dr. Brent Roussin said these high numbers are expected to continue.

“We are only two weeks in the blocking period for the region,” he said. “We are now seeing numbers of exposures that occurred 10-14 days ago.

“We have to move up with Manitobans now.”
