Grandparent dishonest is again in Winnipeg
WINNIPEG – Scams come and go and Winnipeg police say one of the most popular has returned.
So-called grandparent fraud is back.
Here the scammer is targeting the elderly on the phone pretending to be an arrested grandson who needs money on bail.
Sometimes they even send a courier to the victim’s house to collect the money.
Always confirm the whereabouts of a family member before sending cash to help them.
The cops warn people to be very careful when someone calls and wants money for any reason.
Also, never share personal information over the phone.
And if you are a victim of a scam, please report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center, which says there have been nearly 500 reports of such scams across the country in the first half of 2021 alone.
