Jagmeet Singh guarantees to affect native public transport whereas visiting Winnipeg
The federal chairman of the NDP, Jagmeet Singh, is in Winnipeg on Tuesday and promises to electrify local public transport across the country by 2030.
The commitment is part of a climate change announcement that Singh made at the University of Winnipeg.
Singh says he would work directly with cities to electrify local transport, but also notes that the provinces would be involved.
Singh can’t cost this, but says Canada can’t afford not to act on climate change.
“This is a massive investment in public transport and we know that transport is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions,” he says.
He also promised a climate bank to fund an east-west water corridor.
